Butterfly Crossing is located in Buckeye Cove, Little Switzerland, NC.
The weather station is located in a niche, on the south side of Grassy Mountain at Lat: N 35° 50' 44" (35.846°) Lon: W 82° 5' 50" (-82.097°) elevation 3,455 feet (approximately 400 feet below the top of Grassy Mountain) surrounded on the west, north and east by a mixed forest.
As the contour here is very steep the wind readings may be questionable when compared to readings taken from the mountain top or open valleys.
The typical wind speed here may be as much as 60 m.p.h. lower than at the top of Grassy Mountain.
The operation of the Butterfly Crossing Weather Station web site/data is dependent on many factors.
Some of the items dependent on are: Progress Energy, AT&T (att.net, which may be unreliable), EarthLink, the National Weather Service, Oregon Scientific WMR-968 weather station, and a MS Windows Computer.
A fault/defect in/from any of the preceding items may result in flawed and/or incomplete weather data.
When ever there is heavy moisture and subfreezing temperatures the anemometer is subject to freeze up.
Freezing fog and resulting rime ice may stop the anemometer and wind vane until the ambient temperature is above freezing for an hour or more.
Always verify the time of the data as posted on the web page and check with your local media outlet and/or NOAA Weather Radio for important weather updates and information.
